Lucky Sixpence Jewellery specialise in creating fabulous pieces using
only coins. The idea of turning coins into jewellery such as pendants,
bracelets, earrings and rings is not a new one. A forgotten one, but
definitely not a new one.
Indeed, without getting too boring, people having been wearing coins,
etc for many hundreds of years, as symbols of wealth and status within
a group. Much ethnic jewellery today still includes items of local currency.
Of course, in western countries today, particularly England, many people
wear gold sovereigns, etc in the form of rings and pendants.
The practice of actually cutting, drilling and polishing coins was
also carried out in the WW1 & WW2 era. Some soldiers would occupy themselves
when not on the battlefield, with the tools and materials they had around
them. This often resulted in amazing sculptures, works of art and jewellery.
Jewellery was a favourite with the ladies back at home! Thus beautiful
items from coins, shells, etc were produced. Much of the work that still
exists today is known as trench art.
--------------
When I was at junior school, 9 years old, I actually found a ring
made from a coin, whilst digging in our front garden. I recall vividly
how impressed I was, especially seeing as I found it. It was an instant
hit! Obviously it went to school with me on the first opportunity.
Unfortunately, my headmaster was a dink and quickly took the ring
from me and confiscated it. Apparently he was a ex policeman and the
item offended him? Never mind.... It was not until some 10 years later,
did I realise that the ring was a legitimate piece of jewellery and
should not have been took away from me,
As long as the coins are out of circulation it is possible to treat
them as scrap metal and do with them what you may. Certainly it was
likely that the ring had been made at a time when the coin was still
in circulation and this is probably what offended the headmaster. But
i'am sure there was a whole lot more serious issues to deal with at
my school, than me, a 9 year old with a coin ring! Anyhoo,
I now proudly recycle disused coins and bring them back to life as
lovely little pendants and rings. All of the items within these pages
are available anytime. If they are not in stock I will create them immediately.
Some designs include the original date from the coin. If you require
a particular design with a particular date or coin then do not hesitate
to contact me. I am positive I could meet your requiements.
